这一季的故事依然围绕着泰德等五人展开。时间流转到2009年，相恋多年的马修（杰森·席格尔 Jason Segel 饰）和莉莉（艾丽森·汉妮根 Alyson Hannigan 饰）结婚后搬进了新的公寓，过着幸福甜蜜的小日子。他们最好的朋友泰德（乔什·拉德诺 Josh Radnor 饰），在上一季屡次碰壁之后，他决定放弃继续当建筑师，而改行做一名大学教授，同时，他也在努力地找寻自己的真爱之女。 而另一方面，他们共同的好友巴尼（尼尔·帕特里克·哈里斯 Neil Patrick Harris 饰）和罗宾（寇碧·史莫德斯 Cobie Smulders饰），在经过了一年的情感挣扎与斗争，他们终于搞在一起了。莉莉对此感到相当开心，但是巴尼、罗宾二人却难以定位彼此之间的关系。在三个好友的帮助下，他们能不能确定男女朋友关系？
